The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, commonly known as the NYPL Main Branch, is one of the most iconic library buildings in the world. Located at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece opened in 1911 and houses the library's renowned research collections. The building is a National Historic Landmark and one of New York City's most visited cultural attractions.
The Main Branch is a non-circulating research library, meaning items cannot be checked out. However, anyone can use the reading rooms and request materials for on-site use without a library card. The Rose Main Reading Room, stretching over two city blocks with 52-foot ceilings and its signature chandeliers, is a must-see for any visitor to New York. For borrowing books and other circulating materials, visit any of the NYPL's 92 neighborhood branches across Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
