Visitor Guide: The British Library

The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and one of the largest libraries in the world, with a collection of over 170 million items spanning 3,000 years of history. Located at 96 Euston Road in London, the building opened in 1997 and features one of the most distinctive modern architectural designs in Europe.

Unlike many academic libraries, the British Library's public areas are free to enter without a Reader Pass. The exhibition galleries, including the Sir John Ritblat Treasures of the British Library Gallery, display priceless items such as the Magna Carta, the Gutenberg Bible, Shakespeare's First Folio, and original Beatles manuscripts. These exhibitions are free and open to all visitors.

To access the Reading Rooms and request materials from the collection, you need a free Reader Pass. Applications can be started online and completed at the library with two forms of ID. The British Library is an essential resource for researchers in any field, providing access to digital resources, specialized genealogy databases, and the largest newspaper archive in the world.
