ALLDATA is the repair information that professional shops pay for: unedited factory procedures, technical service bulletins, trouble codes and wiring diagrams. Some public libraries hold a subscription, but at every library we checked it works only on computers inside the library, and at some systems only in a few branches. What ALLDATA covers

ALLDATA sells repair information to professional shops and describes itself as the industry's number one choice for unedited mechanical and collision repair information from vehicle manufacturers, trusted by more than 400,000 technicians in over 115,000 shops worldwide. It says it covers 44,000 engine-specific vehicles, 95% of all vehicles on the road today, and it names libraries among the institutions that use it as a reference tool. Its ALLDATA Repair product lists:

  • Repair and maintenance procedures, diagnostic information, technical service bulletins (TSBs) and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • 300,000+ interactive color wiring diagrams, in addition to the manufacturers' own diagrams.
  • Specifications such as fluid types and capacities, and dimensions.
  • Diagnostic flow charts, and testing and inspection information.
  • The same layout for every make and model, so you do not have to learn a different approach for each one.
  • Thousands of automotive terms you can search in Spanish.

ALLDATA says it does not alter the manufacturers' data. Library pages describe their copy in their own terms. St. Louis County covers foreign and domestic cars and trucks made from 1966 to the present. Memphis lists TSBs, DTCs and interactive wiring diagrams. Pikes Peak lists engine-specific diagnostic and repair procedures, electrical diagrams and maintenance schedules. Center Moriches says all systems are covered, including text, charts and schematics. Cuyahoga County warns that some features are not available to library users, so a library copy can be narrower than what a shop sees.

Why you have to go to the library

None of the seven libraries in our table offers ALLDATA from home. St. Louis County and Cuyahoga County label it in-library only, Center Moriches files it under in-library resources, and Birchard Public Library in Fremont, Ohio calls it in-library use only. St. Louis County lists it as a subscription database, and none of the seven pages mentions a charge for using it. Three libraries go further and name the branches:

  • Anne Arundel County Public Library, Maryland: computers at the Busch Annapolis, Glen Burnie and Odenton libraries.
  • Memphis Public Libraries, Tennessee: inside the Benjamin L. Hooks, Frayser and Cherokee branches.
  • Pikes Peak Library District, Colorado: East, Fountain, Library 21C, Penrose, Ruth Holley and Sand Creek.

If your library lists ALLDATA without branch names, ask at the desk or call before you drive over, since a system with many branches may have it at only a few.

Planning your visit

  • Bring your vehicle details. ALLDATA says its repair information is for your specific vehicle year, make, model and engine, so have those ready.
  • Know what you need. The checker above shows whether your library's page names wiring diagrams, TSBs, trouble codes or maintenance schedules. Where a page does not name one, ask staff whether their copy has it.
  • Plan to print. Anne Arundel County's page mentions printing wiring diagrams. Ask about print costs at the desk.
  • Try the library's other repair databases. Pikes Peak's automotive guide also lists Auto Repair Source and Small Engine Repair Reference Center, Center Moriches lists EBSCO Small Engine Repair Reference for use in the library, and Rochester Public Library in Minnesota lists Chilton Auto Repair. ALLDATA at home: ALLDATAdiy

ALLDATA sells a separate product for car owners, ALLDATAdiy, and points to it for single vehicle licenses. ALLDATA says ALLDATAdiy has the same original factory repair information professionals use, including maintenance schedules, color wiring diagrams and repair procedures for your specific vehicle, and that it is kept up to date with recall notices and technical service bulletins from the manufacturer. The library version costs you a trip instead of a license, which suits a one-off job; the home version suits someone who works on the same car often.
