ChiltonLibrary is Gale's online Chilton repair database, with step-by-step procedures, wiring diagrams, maintenance schedules, recalls and labor times for most cars, trucks, vans and SUVs. You can use it free with a library card. We found five states that offer it to every resident or cardholder, and library systems from Los Angeles to Milwaukee list it too. Five state programs we checked include ChiltonLibrary, so you do not need a big-city library to get it. Each one is open to residents or cardholders across the whole state.

Logging in works differently in each. Ohio's statewide page asks you to allow your location or enter an Ohio public or state library card number. South Carolina's Discus uses a statewide username and password that public library staff give out; it changes every August 1, and people who live out of state but hold an active South Carolina library card can still get it. Vermont sends you to vtonlinelib.org to pick your library and log in with your card, and says you do not need a separate Chilton account. Wyoming's GoWYLD says that, with few exceptions, its resources work in a library, at home or outside Wyoming for anyone with a Wyoming library card.

What is inside ChiltonLibrary

ChiltonLibrary is Gale's online vehicle repair database. Gale says it covers repair, maintenance and service information on most cars, trucks, vans and SUVs on the road today, and calls Chilton a source trusted by car enthusiasts and professionals for over 100 years. Its product page lists:

  • Four main tabs: Repair, Labor Estimating, Maintenance, and Bulletins and Recalls.
  • A VIN decoder that shows where and when the vehicle was made, what parts it came with, and an overview of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalls.
  • More than 2,500 videos and animations, sorted by vehicle system.
  • Wiring and vacuum diagrams, diagnostic and troubleshooting information, and manufacturer-recommended maintenance intervals.
  • Technical service bulletins and recalls, plus warranty information and the Chilton Labor Estimating Tool.
  • ASE technician test-prep quizzes for people studying for Automotive Service Excellence certification.

Libraries describe the same features in plain terms. Los Angeles Public Library points to maintenance and specification tables, step-by-step procedures, a labor estimating tool and a print button, and LA County Library adds diagnostic trouble codes and recall information.

Which years and models it covers

Gale's page says it has what patrons need for most years, makes and models, without giving a range, and the libraries that describe coverage word it differently:

  • Wyoming's GoWYLD and Denver Public Library describe thousands of year, make and model combinations covering the most popular vehicles of the past 30 years, plus specialty models. Denver adds vintage cars from the 1930s.
  • The Seattle Public Library says some records date as far back as 1929, and OC Public Libraries describes the most popular vehicles from 1940 to the present.
  • LA County Library says it covers domestic and import vehicles up to the current model year, and Austin and El Paso both say the information is updated monthly.
  • Vermont notes that Chilton recently expanded coverage to more makes and models, including Subaru.

The practical test is simple: log in through your library, choose your year, make and model, and see what comes up before you buy parts or start a job.

These ten library systems name ChiltonLibrary on their own websites. Los Angeles Public Library says you can use it free from home with your card and PIN, or on any of its library computers, and Denver marks it available with a library card.

Using the labor times to check a repair quote

If a written quote lists labor hours and an hourly rate, you can hold it up against ChiltonLibrary. Its Labor Estimating tab gives a labor time for common repairs. Enter that time and the shop's rate in the checker above, add the parts price if you know it, and compare the result with the quote.

Treat a gap as a question, not proof of overcharging. Ask the shop which labor time it used and what else is in the total, such as diagnosis, supplies, fees or tax.

The same login helps with the repair itself. The Maintenance tab lists the intervals the manufacturer recommends, and the Bulletins and Recalls tab shows technical service bulletins and recalls for your vehicle.
