Transparent Language Online is a language course platform that libraries subscribe to, so with a library card it costs you nothing. Transparent Language says the library version covers 140+ languages, including English for speakers of other languages, American Sign Language and more than 40 Indigenous and endangered languages. The login is where people get stuck: you start from your library's link, then create your own free account. What the library version includes

Transparent Language gives these figures for its library version: 140+ languages, 21,000+ hours of courses, 25+ learning activities and 4,000+ libraries worldwide. It says every language and course comes with the library's subscription at no extra cost, new languages are added automatically, and there is no limit on how many cardholders use it at once.

  • Core courses. An Alphabet Course (42 languages), Essentials for travel (73 languages), General Vocabulary (101 languages), a Professionals Course for living and working overseas (9 languages) and Real World Lessons built on news articles and podcast clips (11 languages).
  • English. A collection of 300+ hours. Beginner courses are paired with 40+ other languages, and English-only courses serve intermediate and advanced learners. English for Newcomers comes in American English for 24 languages, and the American Citizenship Test Prep course, in English and Spanish, practices the 128 civics questions of the updated 2025 test.
  • American Sign Language. Three courses with 60+ hours and 1,000+ sign videos: beginner ASL for adults and teens, ASL for babies and children, and a course for library staff.
  • Indigenous languages. More than 40, which Transparent Language says were created by and for Indigenous communities with the non-profit 7000 Languages. The current list includes Cherokee, Comanche, Dakota and several Ojibwe courses.
  • KidSpeak. For children 6 and up, in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, with over 700 words and expressions per language.

How far you can go depends on the language. Transparent Language says most languages have enough material to reach Novice High (Advanced Beginner) on the ACTFL scale, many reach Intermediate Mid, and major languages like Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish go into the Intermediate-High and Advanced levels. How to sign up and log in

Your library card gets you to your library's Transparent Language page; the course itself runs on a separate account that you create once. The Tennessee Electronic Library spells out the steps:

  1. Open Transparent Language Online from your library's website.
  2. Click the SIGN UP tab.
  3. Enter a username and password. Email is optional, but it lets you reset your password.
  4. Click CREATE ACCOUNT, and save your username and password: you need them each time you log on.

Libraries add their own rules. Milwaukee asks new users to create the account on a desktop computer. Austin says to sign up in a browser before you use the app, or to try it as a guest. Lincoln City Libraries connects you automatically on its own computers but still asks for an individual account, and opens access from outside the library to its cardholders. Los Angeles says people who used Transparent Language through RBdigital need to reset their password.

The app. Search the App Store or Google Play for Transparent Language Online. The app needs an existing account, which Transparent Language says you can get through your local public library. Log in with your username and password, or open Mobile access on the website and scan the QR code. Knox County adds that Autoplay lessons can be downloaded for offline use and that pronunciation practice needs a microphone. If a new device hits the maximum number of devices, Lincoln says to contact Transparent Language support.

Why the language counts do not match

Library pages quote anything from 100+ to 140+ languages. Knox County, Memphis, Prince George's County, Fairfax County and Lincoln say over 100; Austin, Milwaukee and the Tennessee Electronic Library say over 110; Los Angeles and St. Louis County say more than 120; Rochester, Minnesota gives 140+, the figure Transparent Language uses now. Transparent Language says every library subscription includes all of its languages and adds new ones automatically, so by its account a lower number on a library page does not mean that library gets fewer languages.

The list behind our checker, read on September 28, 2026, has 144 languages (45 of them marked as Indigenous or endangered), 45 English courses for speakers of other languages, and 98 other language pairs. Milwaukee's page says 37 languages offer training designed for Latin American Spanish speakers; the current list has 39, and 37 for Turkish speakers.
